Clay update

Eeek, I have less than 2 weeks to make things for the show and sale.  I’ve been going to the studio on Saturdays and Sundays but I need to start going during week nights now if I want to get anything into the next couple of kilns.  I thought I was doing pretty well on soap dishes but the last time I went to see my family, my mom took 6 soap dishes (she asked me how many she could have and I said a couple – so she took SIX!).  I tried to make some more yesterday but since it takes time to dry and bisque pieces, I think I’m done making pieces.  It’s all about glazing now baby.

ooooh… glazing, the fun part. i still lovingly stare at the soap dish you gave me. i love your glazing technique, so i am sure they will come out alright. and who can blame your mom for taking 6? they’re awesome!

Glazing is not my favorite part of pottery but I have found that if I make textured pieces like my soap dishes, I can get away with just using 1 glaze so it won’t overpower the texture. The non textured pieces like my bowls need a more complicated glazing treatment to make them more intersting…and that means more work and more time and bigger disappointment if they don’t turn out well…

Will you be putting things up for sale at your Etsy store?

I have such a mental block about selling on line (no mental block when it comes to buying on line though) – it’s the shipping part that’s holding me back (packing, figuring out postage, etc). I don’t think I’ll be able to put up anything until after I’m done with the show and sale in May. Sorry!

Hi Ellen, I’m new at the studio this semester and have been admiring your soap dishes on the bisque shelves. I look forward to seeing them glazed and at the show. I’ll be there too, along with ceramic pears and a few other things I hope to sell. Good luck getting everything done before the show. BTW, I found your blog when I googled “naked raku” – glad I did!

That’s cool :o) I thought I’d ask, because I really love the pieces you’ve shown us here! Best of luck with your show!
